I was stunned. Jason\u2019s parents, aunts, even his older sister\u2014none of whom had ever been particularly involved with us\u2014suddenly felt they had a stake in our<\/em> money. I calmly repeated, \u201cThe fund is only<\/em> for education. That\u2019s what it was built for. That\u2019s what it will<\/em> be used for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maddie, arms crossed, stared at me like I\u2019d just betrayed her. \u201cYou\u2019ve helped Kate with tuition, why can\u2019t you help us with a down payment? We have kids<\/em>, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I reminded her, gently but firmly, \u201cYou made different choices, Maddie. That doesn\u2019t mean we love you any less. But this fund has a purpose. It\u2019s not a general bailout. If you want to go back to school, it\u2019s there for you. That\u2019s always been true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jason muttered something under his breath, and then his mom snapped, \u201cSo you’re punishing her for being a mom? For not being a perfect little college girl like Kate?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said, trying to stay calm. \u201cI’m not punishing anyone. But it\u2019s not about choices being right or wrong. It\u2019s about staying true to what that money was set aside for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next week was a blur. Maddie stopped returning my texts. Jason blocked both me and my husband. I found out later from Kate that Maddie called the whole thing \u201ca betrayal,\u201d and that Jason\u2019s family was talking about taking us to court\u2014even though there was nothing legally promising them a dime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My husband and I sat down with a lawyer just to make sure the funds were protected. We even added clauses ensuring they\u2019d only<\/em> be released for accredited education expenses. It was heartbreaking to go to those lengths, but after that outburst, we felt we had to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kate asked me later, \u201cDo you think Maddie will come around?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
